This healthy turkey chili in the instant pot is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Easy to throw together and simple to prepare, this chili is a win-win all around. The warm and cozy flavors can’t be beaten.

I don’t know about you, but I love a hearty chili in the fall and winter months. In my house, chili fits the bill even on a rainy day in the summer. This warm and comforting chili is healthy, flavorful, and cheap.
In my opinion, chili is even better the next day. The flavors have even more time to meld together, and the result is even more delicious.
Chili is a staple dish in any home and pairs perfectly with sour cream and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. In addition, this chili also tastes great with avocado slices or a warm piece of buttered cornbread.
As a busy working mom, I am always looking for ways to save money and time. An easy chili makes dinner time a breeze and helps me stretch my grocery budget. I have to mention the bonus of leftovers – there are plenty of leftovers with this chili. Also, I recommend freezing and then thawing any chili leftovers to save for dinner in a pinch. A frozen bag of homemade healthy chili has saved dinner more times than I’d like to admit. It’s even easier to deconstruct the chili if you’re feeding little ones or picky eaters.

Healthy Turkey Chili Ingredients
- Bone Broth is my broth of choice for a variety of reasons. Bone broth is packed with essential vitamins and minerals and provides more protein than a standard broth. Also, bone broth is full of many documented gut health benefits. You can read more about the benefits of bone broth here.
- Ground Turkey (85% lean) is cheap and easily accessible meat. This meat pairs really well with the chili seasonings. Not to mention, turkey is an excellent source of lean protein.
- Cumin adds a smokey flavor perfect for chili.
- Oregano adds a lovely herb flavor that compliments almost any flavor.
- Chili Powder gives chili the iconic flavor it is known for.
- Coriander gives the chili an herbed smoky flavor.
- Fire Roasted Tomatoes are the secret ingredient here. These add a grilled, smoked flavor that really takes this healthy turkey chili up a notch. I highly recommend NOT skipping these.
- Garlic is a given. You can use minced garlic if you’re in a pinch. Garlic powder
- Onion is another must-have for chili. It adds so much flavor. The saute function on the instant pot makes it super easy to keep everything in one pot. Fewer dishes is a WIN!
- Black Beans add lots of fiber and flavor to this chili. I try to keep an eye on blood sugar and adding fiber is a fantastic way to do that.

Healthy Turkey Chili in the Instant Pot Instructions
First, dice up an onion and saute with a drizzle of cooking oil. I recommend avocado oil since it has a higher smoke point. Read more about cooking oils here. Any type of cooking oil available will work.
Second, add in your ground turkey. Ground turkey is cheap and pairs well with the chili seasonings.
Next, break apart the meat while the onion continues to cook down. Add in your spices. I like to use a combination of chili powder, cumin, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and coriander. Season with salt and pepper to taste. See the exact measurements in the recipe card.
TIP: It is best to season the chili while the meat is cooking. The flavors from the seasonings blend in with the meat, and the chili is way more flavorful this way!
Now, add in 2 cans of beans (black beans work great here.) And add in 2 cans of fire-roasted tomatoes.
Add in 2 cups of bone broth or a regular beef broth. I highly recommend bone broth for the added protein and nutrition. The taste will not be affected.
Lastly, go ahead and set your instant pot to 10 minutes at high pressure with a natural pressure release. (If you’re an instant pot newbie, 1. WELCOME and 2. a natural pressure release means letting the steam go through the venting lid ) This cooking process is quick. If you prefer, you can also cook it for several hours over the stove.
Now, it’s time to serve! I recommend doing these with freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese. Avocado, cilantro, sour cream, or greek yogurt make great toppings. As I mentioned previously, a warm slice of buttered cornbread would also pair nicely with this healthy turkey chili.
Quick Tips
- Do not skimp on the fire-roasted tomatoes. Fire-roasted tomatoes add a smokey, grilled-veggie type of flavor. In my humble opinion, these really take the chili to the next level.
- Make sure your Instapot is set to sealing and not venting. You’ll want to change it to venting whenever you’re done cooking.
- Do not overcook the chili in the instant pot. The meat can easily crumble if it is overcooked. As a result, the texture will be less than ideal.
- It is best to season the chili while the meat is cooking. The chili is more flavorful this way! If you forget to add seasonings,
- The chili leftovers are great! This turkey chili stays good in the fridge for 2-3 days.
- This chili freezes well. I put some parchment in the bottom of a plastic bag and pour the chili into the bag once it has cooled. It stays good in the freezer for 3 to 6 months.
