How to Make Your Bathroom Smell Like a Spa
With how crazy and hectic the world is right now, everyone could use a spa day at home. These simple hacks will get the bad smell out and the spa scent in! Follow along to learn how to make your bathroom smell just like a spa with these easy tips.
Remove the bad smells with baking soda!
Baking soda is an easy trick to deodorize and clean any drains and or toilet bowl. Baking soda pulls any unpleasant odors and helps rid the bathroom of any strong scents that aren’t spa worthy. Simply sprinkle 1 to 2 teaspoons in each drain followed by running water for a few seconds. For the toilet, sprinkle a little baking soda on the toilet brush and in the toilet bowl. Get cleaning! Also, baking soda is such an affordable (literally $1) way to deodorize and give your bathroom a great base for any spa scent. Even if you don’t have a bad smell coming from a drain, baking soda is an easy way to give your bathroom a little extra clean. White vinegar can also be used to clean drains, but sometimes the odor from the vinegar can be a little bit strong.

Squeeze some fresh lemon.
If you want to freshen up your drains, use a lemon press and squeeze some fresh lemon juice into your drains. The citrus helps to get rid of any stinky smells or bad odors. This effective trick is cheap and easy! A clean bathroom makes the best spa bathroom!
Invest in an air purifier
Air purifiers can help keep the air in your bathroom clean and fresh. If you want to make your bathroom smell like a spa, keeping the air clean is a great place to start. Having clean air is a great way to get a spa-like bathroom. Find an air purifier that works with your budget. They can be a bit of an investment, but worth it! An exhaust fan is also a good idea if you’re having a tough time eradicating odors from a smelly bathroom. If you have a funky house smell going on, you can move the air purifier to your living room or wherever the smell is isn’t the best and use it there. I move my air filter through my entire house.
Incorporate fresh air.
If possible, open up the windows and add in some fresh air. More of us could use some fresh air every now and then. A light and airy space is the foundation for a luxurious spa in your own bathroom.
Need a Spa Smell? Use Essential Oils.
No spa bathroom smell would be complete without essential oils! Essential oils are compounds pressed from plants. Essential oils give off a concentrated scent and are perfect for creating a calm spa bathroom. Not to mention, they are EASY to use and a natural way to freshen your bathroom scent.

Add drops of essential oil to your essential oil diffuser!
To use essential oils, simply add a few tablespoons of water into your essential oil diffuser or fill to the max water line listed inside the electric diffuser. Depending on the size on your bathroom, add 4-6 drops of your favorite essential oils into the diffuser. Turn on the diffuser with your favorite oils and take in the spa vibes! Essential oils go a long way so the best part is they last for a long time! For a fresh spa scent, lavender oil and eucalyptus oil make a relaxing and invigorating blend. Eucalyptus and lavender are soothing and give off major spa aroma when diffused. In addition, cedar wood, lemon, and tea tree also make for great clean scents in your bathroom! The essential oil blend will depend on your personal preferences. This is one reason why I love essential oils. You can make your own fragrance and create a custom spa-like scent. If you prefer a more clean scent, use tea tree or lemon. The blend your choose will depend on your own sense of smell.
If you want to amp up the essential oil scent even more, put a few drops of lavender in your shower and the steam will make the scent even stronger. Talk about an at home spa. I even like to do this in my kitchen sink to improve my home smell. So many uses!
A quick note on essential oil brands:
There are literally hundreds of essential oil brands out there. When choosing an essential oil brand, think about your budget and third party testing. Find a brand that aligns with your main concern and choose a preferred scent. My favorite brand is Paddywax. I love the price and quality of this brand. No, this is not sponsored! 🙂
Use a reed diffuser for a long-lasting spa scent.
Reed diffusers offer a calming and sleek aesthetic to any bathroom! Reed diffusers have become more popular over the past few years and for a good reason. They also do an awesome job of subtly freshening up your bathroom. They are low-fuss and require hardly any upkeep. They are safe and energy efficient way to give your bathroom that spa smell! Simply put the wooden reeds into the oiled vase and the scented oil does the rest of the work. I like to make my own using a spare mason jar. Simple add a few tablespoons of the reed diffuser oil into the jar and then add in your reed sticks. Pick a scent that is light and airy. A lemon verbena, lavender, or sweet orange reed diffuser make excellent choices. Lavender is calming and zen which is exactly what I need more of. If you’re reading this, you might be in need of a little calmness and zen, too. You could also use plug-in air fresheners for the same effect, but the reed diffuser looks more upscale and spa-like!
Use a spa scent fabric softener.
Adding a light spa scent your bathroom linens is one of my favorite ways to bring a pleasant aroma into the bathroom! Choose a brand you feel good about! I love using Seventh Generation because it is scented with essential oil blends which are perfect for the perfect spa smell. This brand also uses more natural ingredients, but the scent is up to you! Try a few scents out and see if you can nail down your signature scent. If traditional fabric softener isn’t your thing, I love using these dryer sheets scented with lavender, too. These scented dryer sheets get any bathroom linens ready for a spa day home. Just simply throw the dryer sheets in with your clothes and smell the fresh scent!
Change hand soaps.
Make your hand soap similar to spa scents. Use an invigorating eucalyptus or calming lavender. Lemon blossom is also a nice scent for a spa-like environment. This is such an easy and affordable ways to bring the spa smells straight into your bathroom.
Make room sprays!
A room spray is the best way to add a spa scent to any room in a pinch. Simply mix 5 – 10 drops of your favorite essential oil with 3 – 4 tablespoons of water in a spray bottle. It’s best to use glass bottles when using essential oils. Give the bottle and quick shake and spray around the bathroom. A room spray is basically is quick diffuser! If you want to get your bathroom spa ready in just a little bit of time, whip up a fast room spray. You can even use this spray a a quick linen spray. Just lightly mist the spray onto your towels.
Incorporate your favorite fresh flowers and fresh plants!
Fresh flowers are one of my favorite ways to add a spa scent to my bathroom. Not only do they smell like an upscale spa, but fresh flowers add so much beauty into any space. They are look lovely and give any bathroom a fresh scent. I like to pick up a few bunches from Trader Joe’s and create a simple flower arrangement in my bathroom. I like to put on top of the toilet or along side the bath. If fresh flowers aren’t your thing, grab a low maintenance, fresh plant like a succulent or indoor fern. Check out this arrangement in this video!

Hang some Eucalyptus for a spa bathroom smell!
Eucalyptus has the most invigorating and energizing spa scent. Once you smell this fresh scent, you’ll be instantly transported to the most relaxing spa. The best way to bring this scent into your bathroom is to hang fresh eucalyptus from your shower head. Once the hot steam hits the eucalyptus, the fresh scent is even stronger! To hang the Eucalyptus, simply tie a piece of twine around the wire holding the bunch of Eucalyptus. Secure the twine and tie a knot at the top of your shower head. Get ready for the ultimate spa experience! This is such an affordable way to make your bathroom smell like a spa. Most Eucalyptus bunches cost only a few bucks at Trader Joe’s. Talk about living WELL on just a little! Your very own hotel spa is just a few steps away.

Use a scented candle
Let’s be honest. The ambiance from a candle is unmatched! I love using candles that are scented with natural oils. You can experiment with different scents, but I love to put one on my bathroom vanity or on the toilet tank. The candle burning while having a relaxing spa day is the easiest way to feel relaxed. While I prefer to use candles with natural ingredients, this white tea candle is to die for. The scent is relaxing and soothing which is exactly what I need for an at-home spa day.
Use wax warmers.
Wax warmers are another way to bring the spa smells into your own bathroom. Wax warmers tend to be a safe alternative to candles which is a common reason why people love them so much.
Set the tone.
Aside from cleaning the air and improving the smell of your bathroom, declutter the space and clean up a bit. You’ve got to declutter in the first place for your bathroom to feel like a spa. Put any wet towels away and hang up any damp towels to dry. Replace the toilet paper roll and fold the toilet paper in a triangle shape like a luxury hotel would. Place potpourri sachets in different colors around the space or in drawers. Get rid of any old plastic bottles and arrange any beauty products in an orderly fashion. Put any cotton balls or q-tips into mason jars so the space feels more organized.
